Selling Your Business
You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to accomplish, and how rare the classic American success story is. A good estimate is that for every 40 people who start with nothing, one might make it. I was that one. I started with nothing about 20 years ago, and since then I have been working constantly to get my business going. I never made it rich, but I have arrived at a comfortable place in my life. A place where I can provide the things for my kids that I never had growing up. So when I found out that there was another, easier way to make money, I was quite surprised.
A friend offered to buy my business for a good bit of money. More than I think it was worth. When I asked him why, he hesitated to tell me at first, but finally he leveled with me. Apparently, his business is to buy and sell businesses. He never runs them, but he makes a huge amount of money off of selling them. When he first explained it to me, I thought it was some kind of strange joke. But he explained that the buy and sell business is actually much more straightforward than I would think.
