Resume No Nos

When it comes to your resume you can follow this simple rule of thumb. If in doubt, leave it out. Stick to the facts and only reveal information that will encourage the reader to call you for an interview.

No Personal Information
Leave off anything related to hobbies or personal interests. If it doesn’t relate to employment it doesn’t belong on a resume.

No Personal Pronouns
Do not use “I” or “me” in a resume. Sentence structure is typically very short leading with action verbs. Sentences like, “I was responsible for…” are not used in a resume. Instead, the sentence would begin with, “responsible for…”

How To Structure Your Cover Letter

March 23, 2010 - 3:50 pm No Comments

The first paragraph should be a simple introduction, telling the reader why you are sending your resume. The second paragraph should paraphrase your experience and how it relates to the company’s open position in 4 to 5 sentences. The final paragraph should boldly state your desired outcome.
Strangers are much more likely to speak to you after an introduction, than if you suddenly rambled on about a topic they are unprepared to discuss. The cover letter should be written to each position and not be a form letter. Make sure and use the same paper as used for your resume and end the letter with your signature written in black ink. Note the following samples for setting up a professional cover letter.
