How do you use, Install and maintain an Apache Server?

September 7, 2009 - 2:13 pm 1 Comment

Hi.
I am going to make a website with News and Articles and I need a Content Management System. I decided to go and get Joomla. The problem is that I need an Apache Server, but don’t know what to do with one. Do I install the software on the hosting site or my PC? If the second one, if my PC turns off does my website completely crash (because my entire site will be dependent on Joomla)? How much space does it take up? Also, how do I maintain it?

I don’t want to spend £1000 for a server in that popular E1 Datacenter in Texas. It is just a fansite for a game I play. If I have to spend thousands I’ll just get Cute News because I know that works without a MySQL database.

You don’t run a dedicated webserver for running websites of this scale. Purchase a web hosting package that has php + mysql. Packages are usually purchased for a minimum period of 12 months. The hosting company will also help you in getting a domain name. Again it is cheap too and it is also purchased and renewed on yearly basis. The hosting company will do all the leg work for you, including helping you setup Joomla. Godaddy is a renowned company that provides both services — hosting + domain and good support.

Having said that, just before you go online, you can set up a Joomla installation on your home computer to see how it works. Google for something called "JSAS" — Joomla Stand Alone Server. I am sure its free but it does not get you "on-line". If you are wondering then yes, JSAS includes apache and mysql and all the stuff you need to test-drive a joomla installation.

Fish tank problems!!?

INGNORE TITLE LISTEN HERE!!!!!!!

i think we all know what my real question

what does all this mean?

‘I gasped. Nothing could be more thrilling than this. Figure of speech of coarse. I laughed. Nothing would be forever. I’ve been looking for my perfect content management system (CMS) for quite a while now. I’ve gone through about 6 or 7 and finally realized that a perfect solution doesn’t exist. Instead, I recently stumbled upon Drupal, which is an open source CMS. It was recently given a CNet “Webware 100” award in the Publishing category. The way Drupal works really is a paradigm shift from all other CMS software that I’ve used. Once I grasped the concept, its been pretty easy to learn

Any good references for using Visual Studio 2003 and .Net Framework 2.0 together.?

September 1, 2009 - 9:12 pm 1 Comment

I work for a company and we currently develop software using Visual Studio 2003 on the Microsoft .Net Framework version 1.1

I have been tasked to look at a Content Management System written in C# but runs on the .Net Framework version 2.0. I know that I can have both frameworks installed on the same machine. What I would like to know is what I would need to be able to develop applications (in case we need to make any modifications to the CMS package) using Visual Studio 2003 for the .Net 2.0 framework. Any good websites or whitepapers or anything similar would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation…..

From everything I have seen you can’t. Even on the MSDN library it claims that to work with a certain version of the framework you have to get the corresponding Visual studio. This doesn’t mean that you can’t create a project in the 1.1 version and not have it run in 2.0, it is saying that the actual development environment is hard wired to a specific version.

To create 2.0 framework applications you need visual studio 2005. However the .NET 2.0 framework should be able to run programs written for the 1.1 because it is backwards compatible.

I could find no official white papers, but people on and off the MSDN forums have said that each visual studio is tied to a version of the .NET framework. One report even said the 2003 debugger crashes when encountering the .NET 2.0 framework by accident. (There was a fix for it)

So it is pretty safe to say that if you want to develop in 2.0 that you will need 2005. Better hurry, I believe the free download expires this month.

Hope this helps!

Free CMS system for real estate?

August 31, 2009 - 12:11 am 2 Comments

I have an existing real estate website with no search features and all the house details i have to enter manually by using frontpage…I need a content management system where i can just simply insert a code into my website that will display and image of the house and the details on the right hand side…..I have used many and they allways require editing of their built in templates. I just need one where i can enter the code into the website and the software will allow me to edit and add tables of values…..It must be free software.

Shopping cart software?

August 28, 2009 - 11:43 pm 3 Comments

I am looking for a shooping cart software to make e commerce homepage for corporates. The problem is, the companies want to update their products by them selves, without using software. They want me to make an online content management system, through which they will be able to update their products. Any good advice???

Agora does that. http://www.agoracart.com/

I have clients that have me set up the basics, and they go in to alter prices and shipping info. So far, they have not wandered into the system to BREAK anything.

Basically, I show them the Admin section with Print outs. I circle the sections that they can MESS with. I also show them a typical product, and again, circle the fields that they can MESS with.

It’s thier business, and they really do not want to BREAK it.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

What are the best Content Management Systems for an online newspaper?

August 27, 2009 - 1:19 am 3 Comments

The online newspaper is going to be a high school newspaper. I’m looking for something that is efficient and easy to use (and still affordable). Something that has ease in accompanying videos would be great. If people who do not have experience with HTML/PHP would be able simply update the site with news articles, that would be great, too. I’ve researched software a bit and found Drupal or Joomla to be the most popular, but I’ve also heard of a program called PHPCow ($100), which claims to not require advanced skills such as coding. I don’t know much about the differences between Drupal and Joomla, however.

Go for drupal.org or wordpress.org

I would prefer wordpress.org for its simplicity, easy of use and very search engine friendly.

Others full blown cms’s include Joomla (joomla.org) , Xoops (xoops.org)
