What are some online community building software that work on MAC?

August 28, 2009 - 11:42 pm 1 Comment

Hi,

I’m looking for low cost, no cost software that will allow me to build an online community. I’d like basic functionality like building a homepage, content management, creating member profiles, discussion groups, threads, upload jpegs, don’t need video or anything just yet. This needs to work on MAC.

I already have a domain and a hosted server, just need the software.

Thanks

Change code in Open Source Software to commercialize?

August 27, 2009 - 1:19 am 2 Comments

I don’t really have a good understanding about legal matter of open source. I read many online documents but didn’t really find specific answers for my own questions. The situation is that I am planning to open an online business which requires to use open source content management software and shopping cart software. However, there is something I want to change in the codes to maximize the potential. My questions are:

1. Am I allowed to change codes and run the website of my own?
2. If the codes are changed, I still need to make notify of the original license, right? However, does it need to be visible for the visitors? For example: "This website is supported by Jooma.."
3. If it is open source, and if someone ask my company to see and reuse my modified version of the codes, do I need to give it to them?

Thanks and looking forward for good responses!
My struggling is that why Amazon didn’t release its open source codes because Amazon uses a lot of open source platforms. I wonder if I modify to add in my own libraries or modules, do I need to release these. Since the libraries/modules are my own codes and it has nothing to do with the original software but just work as the "add-ins"

Yes to all three questions.

"What is Collaborative Software?" " what is Business Intelligence?" "what is Content Management?"

August 21, 2009 - 3:23 am 1 Comment

Sounds like a homework assignment to me…

collaborative software – is software that allows people to work together on the same documents and projects over local and remote networks.

business intelligence – is the gathering, management and analysis of vast amounts of data in order to help with business decisions, strategies, etc.

content management – is the process of sharing information vital to an organization.

All three definitions were found by using www.ask.com (bu any search engine will do the trick) and searching for "define xxxx" (xxxx is the word or term of your choice).

Good luck on your assignment.

Guidance for foundation of a small software company to make financial risk management software?

August 19, 2009 - 6:16 am 2 Comments

I have deep knowledge and vast experience in working as financial risk manager in a big investment corporation. I want establish a company which will make financial risk management soft wares for small investment companies and banks who can’t afford to develop in-house software. I have prepared the design and content of software program but I don’t know anything about computer programming, so I can’t develop this software myself. I would request the learned members of this site to please guide me in all aspects of formation of a software company for financial risk management software.

Hi,

I strongly suggest you to be careful from whom you accept advice. There are many people here who will happily tell you what to do; however, you are talking about an industry with substantial regulations and developping a software company is substantially more complex than just writing some code.

The other suggestion of contacting SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives) is very useful if you are on a tight budget. If you have obtained atleast the first round of funding, you would be far better off hiring someone with experience as an architect or technical product management experience.

Also, Paul Graham has some terrific articles on starting a software company, so you may want to look at his site. Just in case you don’t know Mr. Graham, he is a Ph.D. from Harvard who started the company (ViaWeb) which eventually became Yahoo Stores earning himself $50m+ in the process.

Hope this helps,

Leo
