It really depends on what features you want. If it can be built on an existing CMS like Wordpress, Drupal, or Joomla, then you’re probably looking at $10k-$15k for a basic site.

If you need something proprietary built from the ground up (such as custom back-office software), then you’re looking at $40k+. Add on community features (like forums, custom account pages, Twitter/Facebook integration), and you can easily add another $10k onto that.

I am IT literate but have never used them before. Is it easy to write information and load them up onto the website or is there specfic information that I should know before using one?

All CMS are written to be as versatile as possible. As such, they do contain HUGE amounts of functions you will never use, and require HUGE amounts of space to be loaded (Joomla is 27Mb of code!!!).
Although very versatile, they NEVER solve ALL your specific needs, and you always end-up adding functions yourself.
Their use require you to understand exactly what you are doing, or face the problems of "finding why" the CMS does not perform as expected, by going through megabytes of scripts only prefessionals with experience can understand.
Conclusion?
I have removed many CMS, from Joomla, Drupal, Miva and others, and replaced them with my own, taylor-made code.
Result?
A clear and understandable code, 100 to 200kb only, specifically adapted to client’s needs.
If you can use Joomla, you CAN write code.
And if you can write code, why would you use any off-the shelf CMS but your own????

Writing your own may take you a few days, but understanding another CMS and finding a bug in them WILL take you weeks.
Your choice!

I just want to do websites for small business, but without ongoing support.

Is this difficult to sell? Or is there a way to get around it?

Anything is possible. If you are one person it probably is quite practical to provide ONLY web design services. Also what should be mentioned is that I have noticed a big disconnect between designers and coders. Some of the best web coders could not tell you the difference between green and red if it hit them in the face. On the flip side the vast majority of desiner could not spell PHP so they are not mutually inclusive by any means.

From my own experience I can code wonderfully but layout and design that is aesthetically pleasing evades me. This is why I partner with designers to swap services, i.e. SEO for Design work etc.

What you are describing is quite feasible however I would recommend that you learn some php/mysql as you can build incredibly poweful sites with just a little bit of work.

Best of Luck

Here is a list of consulting companies and cms they offer/support/sell under the search j2ee.
http://www.opencms.org/opencms/en/support/solution_providers/index.html but there are atleast 6 big ones that I know of that are not on this list.

Knowing more info about your clients internal situation might prove to be helpful. They may even have a propritary system. Some companies use j2ee and other web technologies to access sql server and web enable internal systems.

Hello

Try Joomla! a free, open source CMS. You can write your own templates using their tutorial and site maintenance is also easy . You can also enhance your website using extensions most of which are free. Links are given below.

Hope this helps.

A CMS could do this for you. You can schedule a publish date for new content. However, CMS aren’t always intuitive and may require some programming knowledge to set up. Some good one’s to try are CPGNuke and PHPNuke. Joomla is also good.
