The Implications of So Called White Privilege

April 13, 2010 - 3:31 pm No Comments

Both articles speak about a topic they describe as “white privilege”. In their writings, they illustrate the far-reaching implications of such privilege and how this privilege promotes self-awareness among some while discouraging similar growth among minority students. It is implied that an individual’s pride self-esteem and confidence are in part contributed to how they see themselves portrayed in the mainstream media which thereby influences what they believe is available to them in the realm of future education outside the traditional school setting. Based on what you have read so far, what are your thoughts about the subject matter presented to you?

April 10, 2010 - 7:58 am No Comments

The step in communication skill training is about body language. What you have conveyed through your words and what you have conveyed through your body language may differ at times. If you do not have the right body language, you may find it difficult to create the positive vibe you wanted to have. You have to make an effort to match your words with your body language. There are two things which should be avoided in your body language; too much negativity and too much aggression. Keeping an eye contact is highly recommended for proper communication. To make the other person believe in what you say you must establish an eye contact.

A Common History

Without a common history what then do those who comprise a nation have in common.
Two ideas are laid our very clearly as the primary means of developing a sense of national unity and identity. The first is war. The second is oppression. The early settlers, Huntington points out, more readily identified themselves more as individual settlements rather than colonies unified. It was not until the Revolutionary War that group cohesion began to foster. Whether it was the War of Jenkins’ Ear, the French and Indian War, or the many World Wars, each of these conflicts brought along with them a sincere coming together of all for a common goal to face a common enemy.

Research Based On Personal Ads

April 9, 2010 - 3:53 pm No Comments

In my opinion, research solely on personal ads is unimportant but if the researcher can relate the data gathered to another perhaps more worthwhile project then this research would hold some value.

He is simply stating a hypothesis. This hypothesis states that if we find an individual who is has a high fear or anxiety associated with communicating with others, that this person will also have a high rate of loneliness. So that even if they were in a relationship, their fear of communication would still prohibit thing from being fully intimate with the other person therefore their loneliness levels would remain high even with human interaction.

What To Do With Inconsistent Spotty Answers

Furthermore, her response pattern to many subtests was inconsistent and spotty; i.e., she would miss easier items but then answer harder items correctly. She also made errors that involved problems with sequencing (e.g., Numbers Reversed, Digit Span) or perseveration, which is the repetition of previously administered words, letters, or numbers (e.g., Letter Number Sequencing, Numbers Reversed, Memory for Words).

G’s responses on the Wender-Utah Rating Scale (WURS) indicate that, as a child, she daydreamed, was stubborn, disobedient, and sassy, had a low opinion of herself, was moody, got in trouble with authority, and did not perform at her overall level of potential.

What Is The Right Answer

It would seem that many of the answers in this test served as very poor distractors with even the lower scoring students discriminating between correct and incorrect answers. If I were to give this test over again I would first give the exam to other teachers in the same area of study and get direct feedback from them. Next, after hearing their suggestions I would correct the miskeyed items and re-evaluate the distractors that should themselves to be poor. In addition, I would identify and correct the ambiguous items and adjust them to make them clearer. I would implement these changes because they are not only needed but because the exam has only twenty (20) questions, even the smallest errors have a tremendous effect.

Raising Nurturing and Compassionate Children

April 8, 2010 - 3:41 pm No Comments

If racism and racist attitudes become our focus and not that of raising nurturing and compassionate children, I think we will miss the boat. From this example, it is clearly illustrated that the same dehumanizing events that were perpetuated on the black slaves will one day be inflicted on the green-eyed blonde-haired people if children are not corrected and guided.
Classroom teachers must first and foremost, be proactive. They must observe student behavior and listen to student interactions. The seeds of discontent are planted long before a child ever enters the classroom and it is important that teachers at the first sign of trouble immediately address an issue, whether it is name-calling, teasing or exclusion of one student from a group or activity.

The Multiple Degrees of Fulfillment

In fact, if a person carefully studies his writings, he will be able to clearly see that Maslow offers degrees of fulfillment of each need and the interaction amongst needs.
“A theory that predisposes one to focus more on individual freedom and development rather than the larger social reality, works in favor of that reality” (Pearson & Podeschi, 1999)
I am convinced that this particular statement reflects that attitude of an individual with a limited perspective in two areas. The first is in the area of what self actualized people contribute to their communities and the second is the complete lack of understanding of what just the presence of a self actualized person in the midst of others can do to the development of that group of individuals.

Is ADD Help Sufficient

April 8, 2010 - 3:02 pm No Comments

We are faced with the possibility that those possessing ADD are going through life without the adequate help they need. Without agreement there can be no unity in the battle to defeat ADD. If one researcher believes that one characteristic is valid and another is not, how can he work with another researcher who believes both are invalid? We can not focus on solutions without identifying the problem and it’s agreed upon underlying causes.
Subjectivity
The major problem with the 69 listed characteristics is that most put the deciding factor of whether a person has ADD on the researcher rather than the behavior.
