What is the best photo imaging software?

October 12, 2009 - 2:43 pm 6 Comments

I am wanting to get started with photography and right now I’m just practicing. I am looking for the best quality-best price deal on software to use with chromo key backgrounds. I would like it to be easy to use too. Any tips is greatly appreciated.

Photoshop CS3 is the gold standard in image processing. (Note: not in performance, stability…) It costs slightly less than an ounce of gold. Adobe’s list price is $649, but you can get it cheaper if you can swing an educational discount somehow.

Their Photoshop Elements does about 90% of what Photoshop does for a fraction of the cost; you can usually get it Costco cheap or most other stores for under $100.

There are also a number of free programs out there such as Picasa (http://picasa.google.com), which is what I recommend for most people who just want to edit their digital snapshots; probably not what you need.

There’s also Gimp (http://www.gimp.org), which many claim does everything Photoshop does; I’ve downloaded it, but I haven’t gotten around to installing it to see for myself.

There are also online photo-editing suites that might be able to do what you need. (Do a Yahoo! or google search for ‘online photo editing’ or just look around here as they seem to use Yahoo! Answers for advertising)

What is the European Law and how does it affect Digital imaging?

October 10, 2009 - 3:34 pm 1 Comment

What is the European law and how does and what’s it’s impact on taking pictures and obtaining images?

What "law" are you specifically speaking of? There are thousands upon thousands of EU Directives (they are not laws) concerning every aspect of our lives (too many in fact), but none that I know of which have an impact on taking images.

Individual EU countries have differing laws on privacy and the like which could affect the taking and distribution of images.

What Thermal Imaging Camera would you recommend?

October 6, 2009 - 7:52 pm 3 Comments

I am looking for a good Thermal Imaging camera to detect water leaks behind walls and under floors. I am more concerned with quality than price. What would you recommend? I have heard that FLIR is a great brand but there are so many different models, it’s hard to choose from. I need a camera that I can put together a great presentation with. This would be for professional use only.

The FLIR B620 and FLIR B660 are fantastic infrared cameras for your application. These models are about the size of a typical handheld camcorder. My only concern for you is if this size will work with your applications where looking within wall cavities may be too tight for this size camera. This camera should be very helpful below the floor assuming you have a crawl space. The models that are smaller than this yield a smaller image. One of my clients owns a FLIR ThermaCAM E65, which is very helpful, but the image size is small, may be disappointing in a presentation.

Regarding your interest in preparing a presentation with your footage, QuickReport 1.2 software will be helpful for you. I noticed FLIR has this product on their list of products currently on special promotion.

I hope this helps,
RJ

What is the most cost effective 3d imaging software?

October 6, 2009 - 7:52 pm 3 Comments

When I say 3d imaging software, I mean things like auto desk maya, google sketch up, true space and etc. I am already affiliated with all of these programs, but they are extremely difficult to use (except for google sketch up). I need a program that gives me the ability to create realistic renders, make animated scenes (and render those too), easily create models and lets me export my animations. But I need one that is cost effective, in other words, I’d like more bang for my buck.

One word my friend…. Blender – http://www.blender.org , I’ll not try and kid you here, the interface is quite daunting to begin with and takes time to learn, but the results you can produce are easily comparable to Maya or 3DSMax and the best thing about it is that it’s completely free and open-source and that’s about as much bang for your buck as you’re gonna get. It will render out in over 15 formats including AVI, AVIJpeg, Jpeg , PNG, BMP etc etc, and as it is open-source there is a huge community of users, tutorials and forums freely available on the net to help you along the way. As an added bonus it also has a built in game engine that will let you produce stand alone executable games without any programming! What more could you ask? Check out what I produce with Blender here – http://www.spiceyoursite.co.uk or google Blender Art to see work produced by other users of this great software.

What type of imaging scan tests would be use to analyze the anatomy and functioning of the brain?

October 2, 2009 - 8:55 pm 3 Comments

For instance, if one were to go get a scan to check for early signs of alzheimers, which type of scan would be most sensitive to that which would include brain functioning and structure of the brain.

Alzheimer’s is a clinical diagnosis……meaning there is no test other then examination and psychological testing. The only way to truly diagnose is on autopsy.

MRI is the bet study for viewing structures of the brain with incredible detail.

Function, PETscan and Functional MRI look at which areas of the brain are metaboliziong sugars the fastest (which areas are most active), however these tests are very rare and used for research purposes almost exclusively. They are mega-expensive.

What is imaging and spectroscopy observation?

September 30, 2009 - 11:01 pm 3 Comments

I’m doing research on telescopes, specifically Subaru Telescope, and I found it has two modes of observation: Imaging and Spectroscopy. Can anyone explain what they are and what the difference is?

As it was explained to me – "a picture is worth a thousand words, a spectrograph is worth a thousand pictures".

Just about every professional observatory does imagining these days. Rarely, if ever, does a professional astronomer look through a telescope in pursuit of their career.

Spectroscopy is a very powerful tool in that allows researchers to see what chemicals make up the universe.

What can you say about image quality regarding imaging systems?

September 28, 2009 - 7:30 pm 1 Comment

I see all terms being used nowadays:

SNR signal to noise
CNR contrast to noise
MTF modulation transfer function
DQE – ?
general transfer function

and all as function of spatial resolution. Can someone explain this all to me? For example what type of system makes a good x-ray? Someone once said that the MTF ideally should be 1 for all frequencies – is this correct? Is a system that "carries all information" really the one that provides the best image?

How can i stop imaging these things?

September 26, 2009 - 7:33 pm 5 Comments

Sometimes i imagine bad things. By bad i don’t mean inappropriate, i just mean plain out bad. For example, today i was at my cousins house and she has a newborn baby. The whole time we were sitting in the living room beside the balcony and i was imaging me throwing the baby off the balcony. I feel terrible imaging it cuz i think i might act on it!! How can i stop thinking like this? Is this a disease? Or will it just go away on its own.

I have a similar thing however it’s more ways of how to embarrass myself. Like in class I think of myself just stripping naked and running around. Kissing random people in the street or even my friends when they are tlaking to me. No idea why I get those but I try to remove them from my head as fast as possible.

Making fake thermal imaging footage for a home movie?

September 24, 2009 - 7:20 pm 1 Comment

How can I make normal video look like thermal imaging video? For example, making "Predator vision" for a Youtube spoof of the movie.

Are there any filters or tricks/techniques that I can use to tint/color my video, or any conversion filters that I can download?

I have True Image and Premier, and a couple of other editing packages.

Hi Meilien

In Adobe Premiere Pro (Any versions): In the Effects palette, Select "Channel", then "Arithmetic". Apply that effect to Your clip on the timeline. Select the clip. In the "Effects Controls" window for the selected clip, adjust the "Red Value", "Green Value", "Blue Value" parameters until you like what you see.

Have Fun

What is the imaging effect called that uses many smaller photos to create the image of a larger one?

September 22, 2009 - 10:44 pm 6 Comments

From afar the poster or mural appears to be a normal image, but when you get closer, you can see that it is actually many tiny pictures that relate to the larger image you see. What is this called, and Is there a program or software that can do this?
