Looking for a good CMS (Content Management System)?

October 2, 2009 - 8:55 pm 2 Comments

Any good suggestions. Most of the one’s I’ve seen seem to have good tools for wiki, faq, forums, basic page design/templating – but I really need one that can help manage a large number of products in a wide variety of categories and subcategories. Is this beyond the scope of typical CMS’s? (Ideally I’d like it to cost less than $7,000 or be open source/freeware – PHP/MySQL. I could handle it being .NET SQL Server compatible as well.)

try looking for joomla or zencart. others recommend it but i havent tried it yet.

whats the best content management system for my site?

September 30, 2009 - 11:01 pm 3 Comments

this is my site http://www.marketingpro.bravehost.com
and http://www.internetmarketingfix.com

i’m thinking of integrating all my content into the latter, but using the template style of the former, under the second domain name.

the site is basically an ecommerce, blog publishing with RSS, and affiliate membership site,

where can i get a CMS that has all this but is simple and as ‘minisite’ ( because all fonts has to be size 1 or 1.0 em) as

http://marketingpro…..

need advice,

i’m also considering the possibility of open source.
thanks, help greatly appreciated!

I strongly recommend to check this list, where you can choose from at least a dozen of free open-source content management systems.

Is there an open source solution for password protecting a PDF?

September 26, 2009 - 7:33 pm 1 Comment

I am looking for a open source solution for Digital rights management. Adobe products are too expensive and i belive that there must be some open source solution available. My objective is to be able to sell content on the web in PDF format. But the purchaser should not be able to easily distribute it to everybody.
Is it also possible to link the password protection to a user.? For example, the password be linked to the user id and password on on a website. If the user changes is password for the website, the pasword for the pdf is also referenced to the new password.

Good question, there are free applications over the web which you can use in creating PDFs with security from distribution. I’m sorry but I can’t give you all of them. Just try typing "free pdf converter" in any search engines. My favorite is PrimoPDF. If you are using corel applications, you can convert it there too.

Hope this helps.

Drupal, Joomla, Mambo or Moodle?

September 24, 2009 - 7:20 pm 3 Comments

I want to use an open source content management system to maintain a small community newspaper with simple functionality like community calendar, small adverts, news articles etc.

Drupal looks the most customizable and powerful of those I have looked at. Is this the most appropriate?

Moodle is not a good option for a community newspaper. Joomla, Mambo and Drupal are all customisable but each have their strengths and weaknesses. Mambo or even Joomla 1.0.x versions are easier to work with than Drupal and have a large number of additional, optional features provided by 3rd party developers. There is also a strong professional support base for both of these. Skinning/theming either Mambo or Joomla is also much easier than Drupal.

That said, Drupal has some features "out of the box" that are more suited to a community newspaper. You can certainly do this with the others but once you get past the learning curve I think Drupal would be a better choice. It has more of a focus on creating an interactive, community site.

There are already a number of newspaper sites using it very successfully. For example: http://www.observer.com/

What content management system is best for a fitness club website?

Should be open source, easy to use, flexible.

It depends on many things:
– what features you need
– how many people you expect using it
– your ISP & server available options
– how well versed you are into the cms technology

In general, the first place to check out cms’s is
http://opensourcecms.com
view the votes, read the user comments, use the systems as admin, and decide.

just in case you can find a webapp that does your job and then clone it.

Someone tell me a name for my project.?

September 15, 2009 - 9:26 am 1 Comment

Dear Friends,
I’m doing a master degree in Computer science,
Right now I’m planning to do a mini-project using php.
I’m going to create a website using a Open Source Content Management System(Joomla). Just I would implement the basic functionalities of that CMS(Joomla).

Can Someone suggest me a title.

Thanks for your answers..

Do you need to name it right now? It’s likely that a name or amusing acronym will come to mind as you work on it. I wouldn’t care about it till you need to publish it.

If you need one right now, go with Boris. You’ll probably manage to come up with a suitable backronym by the time it’s finished.
