Hi,

I have a requirement to develop a system for multiple users to use that will do the following:

*Allow users to create a new project area.
*A project area can have files uploaded to it which will be version controlled.
*Each project will also have some standard information that is required by all projects, I want to capture this information through web forms if possible which will then generate xml files which are stored in the project area, for downloading, editing etc.
*Allow users to add dates for the project to a calendar and send e-mail reminders.

Can anyone suggest some good Content Management software to allow me to do this? So far I have tried Alfresco which has some of these features but they are not all together, they are split into 2 areas which don’t seem to work together.

Thanks

Karl
I would build my own but i dont have much time, i need to use open source software to speed up development. Can anyone suggest any?

You may contact a CMS expert live at website like definitivelab.com ,etc .

FCC Votes to Begin Crafting `Net Neutrality’ Rules

Oct 22 12:42 PM US/Eastern
By JOELLE TESSLER
AP Technology Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) – Federal regulators took an important step Thursday toward prohibiting broadband providers from favoring or discriminating against certain kinds of Internet traffic.

Despite the concerns of telecommunications companies and the agency’s two Republicans, the Federal Communications Commission voted to begin writing so-called "network neutrality" regulations. Proponents say the rules would prevent phone and cable companies from abusing their control over the market for broadband access.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said regulations are needed to ensure that broadband subscribers can access all legal Web sites and services, including Internet calling applications and video sites that compete with the broadband companies’ core businesses.

"Internet users should always have the final say about their online service, whether it’s the software, applications or services they choose, or the networks and hardware they use to the connect to the Internet," Genachowski said.

The FCC’s two other Democrats voted to support his plan. The agency’s two Republican commissioners voted merely to start the formal rule-making process, but said they are opposed to the substance of Genachowski’s proposal.

Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell said he remains unconvinced that broadband providers are engaging in widespread anticompetitive behavior that requires government intervention.

"I do not share the majority’s view that the Internet is showing breaks and cracks, nor do I believe that the government is the best tool to fix it," he said.

Next up for the FCC is to actually craft the rules, with a vote on whether to adopt them expected to come by next summer.

That would culminate a five-year debate in Washington that has pitted Internet companies such as Google Inc. against some of the biggest phone and cable companies—including AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp.

The broadband providers insist they need flexibility, free from government intervention, to keep their networks running smoothly. They want to ensure that high-bandwidth applications such as YouTube videos don’t hog too much capacity and impede other traffic, like e-mail and online searches. They also say that net neutrality regulations would discourage them from expanding and upgrading their networks.

"We continue to hope that any rules adopted by the commission will not harm the investment and innovation that has made the Internet what it is today and that will make it even greater tomorrow," Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen said in a statement.

But companies such as Google, Amazon.com Inc., eBay Inc.’s Skype and Facebook Inc. argue that without such rules, the broadband companies will become online gatekeepers that can prioritize their own online services or those of their business partners—and potentially put others at a disadvantage.

Markham Erickson, executive director of the Open Internet Coalition, called Thursday’s vote "the first step toward … creating a framework that promotes innovation and consumer choice on the Internet."

The Open Internet Coalition represents public interest groups and big Internet companies, including Google, Amazon and eBay.

Genachowski’s plan calls for the agency to formally adopt four broadband principles that have guided the FCC’s enforcement of communications laws on a case-by-case basis. Those principles state that network operators must allow subscribers to access all online content, applications, services and devices as long as they are legal.

The FCC relied on those guidelines last year when it ordered Comcast to stop blocking subscribers from using an online file-sharing service called BitTorrent, which is used to transfer big files such as online video. Comcast is challenging the FCC ruling in court.

Genachowski also wants the FCC to adopt two additional principles that would bar broadband providers from discriminating against particular content or applications and require them to disclose network management practices.

And he is seeking to apply all six rules across all types of broadband networks, including wireless systems, which have been largely unregulated.

"The time is now to move forward with consideration of fair and reasonable rules of the road," Genachowski said Thursday. "It would be a serious failure of responsibility not to consider such rules, for that would be gambling with the most important technological innovation of our time."

This is how I see it. The internet service providers have spent billions of dollars investing in their business. And then they offer me a choice, I can purchase their service and go on the internet, or I can not purchase it. I feel the government, who did not invest billions in the internet service provider business, has no right to tell them what they can or cannot censor.

I do not own the internet service. Therefore I should have no say what content they provide me, other than purchasing their service if it pleases me, or not purchasing their service if it does not please me. Just like with any other business.

</div>
<br>
<strong>n</strong><br>
Student learning takes place by building Web Pages in the W3 Standards
professionals web designers use on the Internet. Beginning with development of
understanding for “good”, or effective web sites, and “bad”, or poorly designed
or implemented web sites, students learn analysis and design ideals through
research and investigation of current websites.<br>
<br>
Using HyperText Markup Language (HTML) as the basis for their pages, they then
learn to apply the analysis, design and "user friendly" concepts, while
implementing controls of the formatting and display of information on a web
browser (i.e., Microsoft Internet Explorer). Beginning with small projects of
single pages, they learn structure, execution of code, and implementation of
tools to create fully functional pages. They then expand this understanding to
more complicated websites.<br>

<br>
Exposure to a very basic tool for HTML development, students progress to simple
development software for experience, and then add the use of Dreamweaver*, with
possible expansions into Flash and/or Fireworks animation options. Doing this,
students get a variety of software exposures, while developing deeper and more
complicated application techniques. <br>
Students also have an introduction to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); the web
community of developers are pushing for this option to become a standard for all
web sites. Depending upon class progress and student achievement, other topics
can be included. For this course, created final projects will potentially be
added or used to update the CV school web site.<br>
<br>
<strong>Advanced Web Development</strong><br>
Students wishing to continue developing their understanding of web design may
register for higher levels in Web Design, with larger and more diverse projects.
With advanced class options, the student may either work within a frame work of
skill development projects, or propose a project that would include these skill
sets. Foundational skill requirements would include expansion of Cascading Style
Sheet understanding and use; understandings in website management, website
analysis and standards development, and implementation of website updating and
maintenance; and exploration of Flash and Fireworks. Skill sets learned in prior
Web Design classes and familiarity with development and ease of implementation
will increase learning options and self-determined project choices. A goal for
this class would be development of a student web master to assist with the CV
web site. There is a potential for this class to take place all year, with
approval.</div>
<img src=’footer.png’/>
</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>

you forgot to add the ending quotation on the file path string of your <a href="">

ABSTRACT

Beyond Web 2.0 — How RDFa Can Help to Democratise Data on the Web.
Presented by Mark Birbeck.

Publishing to the web has never been easier, with the proliferation of content management systems, online blogging platforms, microblogging, and more. However, publishing data is either the preserve of organizations prepared to manage their own IT, or requires individuals to sign up for one web 2.0 service after another.

RDFa provides a straightforward means by which data can be published as easily as a web-page can, and the implications are enormous.

From large organizations to the individual blogger, anyone can now publish data by simply placing extra markup in their pages, putting individuals back in control of their own data.

Instead of burying their data in an ever growing array of online services, individuals will now simply publish once, and allow third-party services to consume their information — from profile information to items for sale, from film reviews to favorite recipes, your web-pages become your API.

By allowing everyone to have an API, RDFa creates the possibility of a new generation of applications that will operate across our data.

Mark Birbeck works on standards and applications at the juncture of rich user interfaces and the semantic web. To help these two worlds communicate, he invented RDFa. He’s an invited expert at the W3C where he is deeply involved with XForms and XHTML 2. Alongside his standards work, he has instigated a number of open source projects, including the Ubiquity XForms and Ubiquity RDFa Ajax libraries. His commercial work involves consultancy, development work and training, in both XForms and RDFa.

I am currently a graduate student and will be graduating in December. These are my skill sets

Operating Systems : Unix, Windows, Solaris, Mac OS.

I have worked as a software intern at Fidelity Investments, Boston for 8 months under the Fidelity Investments Management Technology (FIMT) wing. The internship gave me considerable level of understanding in Software Development, Deployment and Troubleshooting, Web Development, Content Management Systems and Business Requirement Analysis.

Job interviews are becoming hard to find; let alone the job. And the scenario worsens if someone needs an H1B sponsoring to work. I know asking favors like this in the Yahoo Answers community is weird. But its just a hope that programmers from different companies would have a look at my skill sets and may be someone would refer me to his company thereby helping me to get an interview slot.

I would be very thankful if you could help me out by forwarding my resume to your respective companies if they are looking for entry-level positions. I apologize for posting a favor like this here. If you need additional info, please let me know.

I have already posted in job boards like collegegrad.com, careerbuilder, etc. But today, everyone knows that a person with a reference has more chances of getting an interview than the one who comes in through the job sites.

I am also aware that I may have to be patient to get my interview calls for all those companies which I have applied. But from your side, I hope a small reference might help a long way.

I’m not the person you’re looking for, but I wanted to give a helpful tip. Besides "software analyst" web analysts are high in demand. With your skills set, you could easily pick it up. If you’re interested, check out Avinash Kaushik.
Don’t just sit around for a job. Get skills.

Ok, so I’m a web designer and I really want to be able to code some back-end stuff. I have played around with wordpress and I like it but I’d really like to do some stuff that doesn’t need an entire blog management tool. Is there any software or tools that allows a non-experience programmer to build back end functions with relative ease? Like user authentification, user management, creating a very simple news/blog system, ability to upload content etc?

If not, please recommend the place to start learning PHP. Thanks!

Not sure if this is the perfect answer for you, but if you’re looking for a way to do PHP locally without needing to use your server, you can download something like XAMPP (just do a quick search for it). That will allow you to setup a local server on your PC including Apache, PHP, and MySQL. Then, you can get something like RapidPHP (www.rapidphp.com I think or else just search for it) which allows you to code PHP and test it out on your site, if you have XAMPP running the background with PHP turned on.

With those two things, you’ll have a nice little PHP development environment right there on your PC where you can test things out to your heart’s content. I’m sure there are other solutions but that’s what I’ve used.

Hope that helps.
