If you cut the waffle in the first one and possibly shorten it a bit to get straight to the point, then it will be the best. No one wants to read too much information, they just want the facts.

I like the 2nd one because basically you get straight to the point.

A combination of the two would be the best.

Tech Writers, Do U Have Job Advice?

September 3, 2009 - 7:23 pm 2 Comments

Grantwriter/fundraiser wants transition into corporate environment as a tech writer. What industries have greatest demand? What recommendations do you have for certification/background? What percentage of writers work freelance? How common is home office option? Is the field fairly insulated from changes in economy? What are the common tools of trade (specific software types, etc.)? What’s best way 2 market skillset? I’m experienced in crisis management, donor relations, web content and grant proposals. Any tips on how to translate nonprofit experience n2 corporate setting? Finally, what’s best way 2 research competitive salary/work conditions? Early search shows income range as $70-$110k w/ greatest concentration of jobs in IT or Government sectors. Seems many jobs in DC, northern VA. Your comments/insights welcomed. Thank you! Happy Holidays 2 All!

I’m a senior manager for IT work in the Government sector, as a contractor – not a federal employee. Over the years I’ve had to explain to some tech writers that the need is declining in our industry. Not so long ago, a tech writer was automatically assigned to every project team producing deliverable documents. Today, with the advances in word processing software, the drafts from the technical team (programmers, system administrators, etc.) are nearly ready for publication. The remaining work required is handled by an administrative assistant and by the Project Manager’s review.

There are certainly some sectors that continue to demand good tech writers. I don’t see IT or Government as having such a high demand.

I know this answer may seem disappointing or even harsh. I believe you are better served knowing this perspective before you make the career shift described in your question. Worse, when we do employ tech writers, we can find one for $40K to $65K even in the expensive Washington, DC job market.

I’ll finish with a recommendation I have given to other tech writers. Use your current opportunities to learn the subject matter about which you are writing. Using an example from my field: If you can write a Database Administrator’s Guide for an application, you can certainly understand those instructions and become that database administrator. Volunteer to help the testing team so you’ll have the chance to use the software (it helps your tech writing anyway) and demonstrate your command of the available functions. You might need a training class or other help getting started, but these are great opportunities. OK, writing an aircraft manual doesn’t qualify you as a pilot. However your question notes experience with web content. There is a definite increase in the need for content managers, not for traditional web sites where content management software handles most of the job for the authors and approvers, but for the explosion in collaboration web sites – primarily MS SharePoint. If this doesn’t appeal, certainly you have learned some things from your other experiences (donor relations, crisis management, etc.) that can translate into opportunities.

The tech writer career path is fine, and I encourage it if that’s what you enjoy. Just understand that the tech writer career path peaks at a lower salary level than these others (my wife teaches young children – talk about a low salary peak!). Even if you are very good, there is always a new crop of cheap tech writers available to corporate employers. Go for it if you enjoy the work and aren’t as concerned about the salary.

Good luck whatever path you follow!

Nine Ways to Maximize Your Marketing Dollars During the Recession: Customer Service

September 2, 2009 - 1:40 am No Comments

“Think relationship, not campaign” is the mantra of customer service on the Web. Building stronger relationships with your present customers is the key to getting them to continue to do business with you.

In this difficult economic climate, selling more to the customers you already have is more cost-effective than raising your prices or acquiring new customers.

If i have one webserver and 2 web developers that work for me from distance …..(PART 2)?

September 1, 2009 - 9:12 pm 2 Comments

what should i supply them in order to make their work easier…and when i say easier i mean to cooperate well and to make good result?…

one good answer that helped me was this one from H4×0rchix0r

I think you should have:

1) a project management application that all three of you can access and update
2) a test environment – for that, I would recommend virtualization so that it doesn’t interfere with your production environment

That is the bare necessary. If you want to throw in some free caffeine, they’ll just love you more:)

for 1 and 2 i still have questions

1)project manager has to do with content management?and if not then what is the difference?

2)what is the role of test enviroment?

and i also want to state that i want to be the person who guides the process and organise developers that make dynamic sites, flash, actionscript, animations .is this software appropriate and if yes how?i would like to hear your view on this because i am an amateur thank you

Most collaborative development environments include:

1. Some sort of concurrent versioning system (cvs). A cvs allows users to work on the same document without wiping out work done by others, and to "roll back" changes if errors or unwanted changed are made.

At the very least, you should have some sort of file check-in / check-out system so that your team knows when the other guy has / is making changes to a file. Some Web development tools, notably Dreamweaver, have check-in built into the software.

You can also find cvs systems at sourceforge.net.

2. There should be a project management system, too. Such systems assign tasks to users and manage deadlines, resources, etc. You can also find this software on sourceforge.

3. You should require your team to back up allitems before changes are made and require all changes to be documented. A good cvs will include these features. Trust me, nothing is worse than undocumented changes, especially if they can’t be recovered.

Adding HP 1100C to Web JetAdmin?

August 28, 2009 - 11:42 pm 4 Comments

I have an HP Business Inkjet 1100C connected to my PC via LPT1. I have installed HP Web JetAdmin and it has detected a number of HP printers on the network, but not this one. Is it possible to add this directly to Web JetAdmin?

Alternatively, is it possible to get a copy of the HP1100C management software? It provides pop-up warnings for printer problems, including estimates of cartridge content.
The printers are HP, the PC is HP and the software is HP. I tried loading the utility from the printers CD, but the application kept uninstalling itself. Very frustrating. The web jetadmin link is from the 1100C installation disk.

So, all HP, but not happy

the Web Jetadmin software is designed to administer printers on the network, not attached to PC’s.

Software to put on a server, for web filtering. I want it to be proxy server, so clients can connect.. more in?

August 27, 2009 - 1:19 am 1 Comment

I want to have a web filter.. I want it to be on a server. It would be a proxy content filtering that users will have to connect to when opening IE.

Or is their something like a "BIG server management" pack where you have Users, Web Filtering, Restrictions, Shared Desktops, File Access and many more.

Can anyone help me?

like http://daddythis.info ?

Then you need a server(go to wdservers.com) and s/w(go to glype.com) and install s/w on the server and your are good to go…
