What is a content management system?

October 14, 2009 - 5:41 pm 3 Comments

I’m confused. I looked at the drupal and joomla sites and I don’t understand what they do. Do they help me make entire websites that have user log ins? A.K.A. are they just basically tools for making interactive web pages?

What kind of technical knowledge do I need to know before I use them?

A content management system allows people to add, edit or delete content — be it Web pages, pictures, polls, movies, whatever — to a Web site.

The CMS does this automatically for you. You don’t need to know HTML, you don’t need to edit anything: You simply type, or upload a file, and the CMS puts it on the Web site for you.

You need a fair amount of technical knowledge to install and customize a CMS. You need virtually no technical knowledge to publish content with a CMS; that’s the entire idea behind it.

About web browsers! website development! help!?

October 2, 2009 - 8:55 pm 2 Comments

hey! my group is developing a website for our school. We used joomla! for the web content management. We modified everything from html to css and to everything..

The problem is this: our template looks good in firefox mozilla but when we used the Internet Explorer, our template for the site is completely distorted! why is this like this??? what are the possible solutions for this! pls help asap!

Some websites are not cross-browser because of the way in which the code was written. You might want to double check the HTML and CSS to find some scripts that are not compatible with the browsers.

What is the easiest content management system to use?

September 28, 2009 - 7:31 pm 3 Comments

I need a free CMS that is so simple to use that it’s nearly intuitive – or as close to intuitive as I can get.

I have clients who insist on managing their own web site but cannot adhere to design rules when editing the HTML… mostly because editing the HTML is beyond the scope of their abilities and they don’t have time to learn it all.

I need something that allows for adding images, editing text and renaming links… page creation is not necessary.

You can try Joomla.

What’s the latest technology for content management systems ?

September 24, 2009 - 7:20 pm 1 Comment

I’m a web designer. Currently, I’m updating my client’s website manually e.g. using dreamweaver. Things are getting quite tedios for larger websites and I want to let my customers update the websites themselves. I’m thinking of learning Typo3. Is it any good ? Features I need include photo gallery, product catalog, articles.

Don’t know about typo 3, but have you considered Wordpress?

Latest version is 2.5 – which has a much improved method of adding graphics.

With the plugins available, you can build membership sites, CMS systems, photo galleries, normal websites, etc. etc.

It also has many SEO advantages.

Spending a bit of time learning about Wordpress would be time well spent IMHO. (I’ve converted a few of my DW based sites to blogs)
