how much should a fresh web designer charge for making a company website, complete with content management?

September 22, 2009 - 10:44 pm 1 Comment

I’m seeing costs of about $2000 quoted. Try playing a customer and search the web for web site builders. $100 a page is typical with added charges for simple things like links and handling photos. On the other hand, there are lots of web builders out there. Have a look at "craigslist", a bulletin board system, and hit on "Gigs" and "Computer" to see who is out there and what is wanted.

Hi, Can u suggest any tool which can manage my E-mail campaign, web analytics etc?

I am looking for integrated online marketing tool for one of my clients. Preferably, something which can manage my email campaigns, web analytics , PPC bid management and web content management. Can you suggest any tool that is effective and gives me all data in one dashboard?

I’m afraid you will not find all in one box.

However, even if you did you will end up paying lots of money for it.

However, you should be able to do all that with a few tools.

Try this site it mentions about aweber and how it’s a useful tool to manage your clients and web analystics and email campaigns all in one.

Looking for easy, free, web-based CMS (website content management system) that functions like a forum?

I use FrontPage 2003 for most of my sites, simply because I’m more comfortable with it than Dreamweaver. In the past 2-3 years, I’ve created all my sites using FP or DW templates, where you create the ‘dynamic web template’ and then add ‘editable regions’ to all the template-based pages.

The downside is that ALL the pages of your site have to OPEN when you make a change to the template. Then you have to re-save the template, tell it to simultaneously change all the pages, and then ‘Save All’ the pages (which is a pain in the but for large sites).

I haven’t found a free or cheap CMS that’s easy to learn, easy to customize, and works like a forum – allowing you to post new pages online without having to OPEN the site in DW or FP.

I’d like to create sites with editable regions, and be able to post new pages online by logging in through my browser (like a forum). I’d also like to be able to change the template and all pages without having to open them all & save them all.

Where can I find out how to create an XML based Content management system? Good resources on the web?

I have worked with various CMS systems before and I am not sure whether a CMS thats entirely XML based would be such a good idea. Most (or rather ALL) of the CMSs that I have seen or worked with use SQL based RDBMSs. XML files normally tend to be cumbersome to work with when dealing with large volumes of information and they lack the relational structure of RDBMS. For the CMS to run on XML, I would imagine a lot of file fragmentation and all. That would complicate the data access logic and all.

If however, you are looking for a CMS which supports XML i.e. can maybe provide some of the content as XML using an XML publishing technology such as RSS or ATOM and the like… then you just need to find a CMS with an RSS feeds module… and today almost every other serious CMS has such a facility. A lot of open source CMS have that capability Joomla, DNN, drupal, PHPNuke plus other commercially available ones.

About creating a CMS… unless you have a lot of time and resources or want to go commercial…. dont reinvent the wheel… just use one of the many existing CMSs. Or perhaps you could adapt an existing open source CMS framework to suit your needs (licensing allowing or course).

Which is the best content management system in the world for designing a web site?

That depends on what content you want to manage.

There are a number of Wiki packages out there that are freely available. MediaWiki (the system used in Wikipedia) is probably the best known.

You can also use Ruby on Rails, Zope, or a number of other free packages.

From HTML in Emacs to Drupal Content Management System (CMS)

After a decade of working with emacs to build HTML web sites, a community based site required a move to a content management system. A design was first done quickly on paper. More effort was required to collect all the content. There are many options for a CMS, but I choose to go with the most popular one, Drupal. You will need to spend time learning Drupal. Fortunately DVD based learning is worth the cost. I provide a guided tour through two web sites: drummerfarms.com (for my condo) and visualphysics.org (a research in mathematical physics).

What’s the best content management system to allow web retards to edit content?

September 9, 2009 - 3:14 pm 3 Comments

I’m what you might call an amateur webmaster. I’ve been building web pages since I was in 3rd grade, (I’m 23 now) but mostly just for myself or for small businesses that don’t have much of a need for constantly updated content.

However, I’ve built a website for a property management company that needs to change rent prices and other small content things on a regular basis.

Even though I haven’t used a content management system before, I’m pretty certain I can figure out how to use one… I’m a quick study. I’ve got PHP and MySQL access and everything. There just seem to be a lot to choose from, and I don’t know which one would suit my purposes best.

Ideally, I’d like to be able to make my own layout/template, and just designate a few blurbs on each page that are easily editable by a third party. These people don’t have a lot of web expertise, so it needs to be pretty simple for the end-user.

Any suggestions?

Which Content Management Service and which web hosting service should I use?

September 7, 2009 - 2:13 pm 3 Comments

My goal is to host my personal webdesign portfolio. I need to have this features: a blog, a CMS to help me organize the content (I can read some code but I’m not a programmer), a photo gallery, RSS feeds.

I need a CMS (open source) and host (budget= $10/month) that are easy to use and have a lot of features.

Please give me the names and tell me why they are better than others.

Thanks!

To host your site for free, I would highly recommend the following 2 sites.

Awardspace -> http://www.awardspace.com (PHP + MySQL)
50webs -> http://www.50webs.com

Both of these sites allow you to host for free and does not have any advertisement pop ups like those provided by geocities.

I have sites hosted on both the companies. Example
Awardspace -> http://www.wanginternet.com
50webs -> http://cctvcamera.50webs.com

Also, read a review I wrote on Awardspace at http://www.wanginternet.com

As for CMS, go for either Wordpress or Mambo. WangInternet.com is on Wordpress and I love it. It’s easy to set up and it’s easy to use.

Hope it helps.
