Can you provide website designing service, but without hosting, content management, etc?
I just want to do websites for small business, but without ongoing support.
Is this difficult to sell? Or is there a way to get around it?
Anything is possible. If you are one person it probably is quite practical to provide ONLY web design services. Also what should be mentioned is that I have noticed a big disconnect between designers and coders. Some of the best web coders could not tell you the difference between green and red if it hit them in the face. On the flip side the vast majority of desiner could not spell PHP so they are not mutually inclusive by any means.
From my own experience I can code wonderfully but layout and design that is aesthetically pleasing evades me. This is why I partner with designers to swap services, i.e. SEO for Design work etc.
What you are describing is quite feasible however I would recommend that you learn some php/mysql as you can build incredibly poweful sites with just a little bit of work.

Sure, you can. I believe you could specialize in 2 fields:
1. You could just create web design for customers – and then they will use for their any purposes – for on-line websites/stores/applications. etc.
2. You could make integration of the design into the site/store also (programming knowledge would be required here). So you will provide customers with complete solution that they will use on their own servers and will manage themselves.
Sure, you will need to have your design portfolio on the website – it is a ‘must have’ point.
