Raising Nurturing and Compassionate Children
If racism and racist attitudes become our focus and not that of raising nurturing and compassionate children, I think we will miss the boat. From this example, it is clearly illustrated that the same dehumanizing events that were perpetuated on the black slaves will one day be inflicted on the green-eyed blonde-haired people if children are not corrected and guided.
Classroom teachers must first and foremost, be proactive. They must observe student behavior and listen to student interactions. The seeds of discontent are planted long before a child ever enters the classroom and it is important that teachers at the first sign of trouble immediately address an issue, whether it is name-calling, teasing or exclusion of one student from a group or activity.
