what to study in graduate school for Web Content Specialist / Graphic Designer on web ?

January 18, 2010 - 10:46 am No Comments

I’m about to graduate with my Bachelors degree in Creative Advertising with a minor in Computer Information Systems.

I am interested in pursuing a career similar to a web content specialist / graphic design (web content management, writing for the web, graphic design and site management)

I know html, css, java and I’m familiar with paint shop pro and indesign but I KNOW I need to become way better in these programs as well as others. I also want to learn as much as I can about Flash/ website building as possible (preferably through a classroom / grad school)

What fields/degree would be appropriate to study in grad school for these careers?

My creative advertising degree touched on graphic design and web content. However, I want to go further into it…

Thank you for all recommendations! I was thinking about going to a graduate school somewhat in the southeast (St Louis, Chicago, Florida, Tennessee, Ohio) I’m just so confused on what to study!

Looking for a web content management system?

December 30, 2009 - 4:34 am 2 Comments

I work for a large school district, and we have about 40 various teachers/staff members who edit various sections of the website. Right now, we just use Dreamweaver and Contribute, but that system is difficult to support and we have a number of problems with it.

We want to migrate our website to a CMS, so our "web editors" can edit the site directly from their browser, and make the entire process simpler. However, I’ve done a ton of research and I am having trouble picking a specific system, I was wondering if anyone could make a recommendation.

Threre are three main requirements:
1) Must support Active Directory (or LDAP) authentication, rather by default or with a patch/module/add-on – we want the editors to be able to log in with their existing accounts.
2) Must support per-user or per-group permissions. Such as we put several teachers in the "high school" group, and they can only edit pages related to the high school.
3) Must be extremely simple/easy for editors to use. We don’t want to teach our editors how to go through 20 steps just to create a single page. I don’t care how hard it is for the administrator side, as I can manage, but for the editors it must be simple.

Those three requirements are a must, as we’ve tried to do without those three things before for other projects, and it turned out being a disaster. Does anyone know of a CMS that meets those requirements?
Joomla lacks user/group permissions. Basically a user can either edit every page with Joomla, or they can not edit any page. There’s no way to assign certain users permissions to certain pages.

Joomla 1.6 will have this feature, but it’s in Alpha right now, and we don’t want to use potentially unstable software on a production environment.

Drupal does everything you’re looking for. It would probably be worth it to hire a professional to make it happen. You won’t have to pay anything for the software, just for the configuration.

Drupal already has very good support for multiple editor levels. The CCK module makes page-editing a breeze. When a user is on a page she is authorized to modify, any moddable sections have their own ‘edit’ button.

There is also an LDAP integration module that can be used to allow existing passwords to be used for the system. http://drupal.org/project/ldap_integration I haven’t used this myself, but it looks pretty straightforward.

I think Joomla also offers many of the same features, but you’re more likely to find a drupal dev in your area, as it’s a bit more common.

Where can I find web content pros in NYC please?

November 19, 2009 - 10:13 pm 1 Comment

I am trying to contact web content professionals working on managing content or web projects at web sites or web agencies in NYC (not designers, programmers or technology people – content). Are you one of those? Do you know anyone I could talk to?

My client (I am an independant consultant) Synomia.com is the leader of site search software in France. They now have the biggest market share in site search software in France. They product is a very advanced, very automated, and a very affordable hosted search software for large content web sites (government sites, educational institutions, large corporate sites, etc.).

The goal is to profile the current needs of these professionals in the area of site search services and software. In practical terms, I will organize a meeting attended by senior Synomia management and structured like a high-level focus group on: web usability, content management, web information architecture, search usability, audience measurement on large web properties.

We are not selling anything. We just want your help in understanding what professionals in the US need in the area of site search. Depending on your input, this could become a launch pad for a position with Synomia later or a partnership with your employer (agencies, web integrators, etc.).

We will be in NYC in a couple of weeks. I have been a specialist of Internet software for over 15 years now (Netscape, Infoseek, Disney Internet, etc.). I have created a consulting company that helps European and US-based software publishers, resellers, and buyers partner to take advantage of unique technologies that only exist in one of these two regions.

Thanks in advance for your help and feel free to call on my if there is ever anything I can help with!
Best regards,
Dan

Do you know of any good web hosting companies?

November 2, 2009 - 3:30 am 7 Comments

I’m looking for a web hosting company to host my business website. I’d like to conduct some e-commerce and also to be able to set up a content management system on my site. Do you know of any good web hosting companies that could accomodate someone with needing these features?

I recommend Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html

They’re the best:

1. You get a free domain from them (actually 2 if you use the promo code, more about that later)
2. They have 500 GB of Disk Space and increasing weekly
3. 5TB (5000 GB) of Bandwidth and increasing weekly
4. You can use their huge Disk Space and host multiple sites on a single account.
5. Their standard price is $119.40/year ($9.95/month if you pay yearly)
but you can use the Promo Code: PLUS (at sign up page) and get the $50 discount + 2 Free Domain Names
6. This way you get them for $69.40/year ($5.78/month)

P.S. They have OneClick Install so you can install a bunch of software like Wordpress, Joomla either totally automatically, or using advanced setup, or you can even install manually whatever CMS you want.

P.S. If you’re willing to pay $20+/monthly for a webhost I recommend:

1. http://www.mediatemple.com
2. http://www.slicehost.com

In terms of a Web Applications Developer role, what does “bespoke web applications” mean?

October 28, 2009 - 1:46 pm 3 Comments

The candidate will be responsible for assisting with the design, development and maintenance of websites, content management systems, e-commerce and other bespoke web applications.

Bespoke derives from the word "bespeak", meaning "to ask for". Bespoke web applications would refer to web applications designed to the customer’s specifications.

Tailor fit would also be a welcome analogy.

Web applications that are "tailor fitted" to meet the customers needs.

I hope that helps.

What do you think of Vignette ver6 or ver7 CMS?

October 26, 2009 - 3:26 pm 2 Comments

Anyone used Vignette ver6 or ver7 CMS to manage a website? What do you think of the product? Is it easier to use compared to other web content management solutions you haved used in the past?

It is a brutal way to do it. Vignette is purely vapor ware and gives you nothing. Imagine you wanted a chair and Vignette was the vendor. You would pay them huge $$ and they would drop you off at Home Depot and say "everything you need is there".

It is hugely complicated to setup and maintain. Has no security on the web pages (NTLM). Once cached anyone can look at it. It is not scalable in anyway. The plugin has huge overhead. You need the CMS, the DB, CDS, and web servers. No redundancy in the CMS for fail over. Lots of issues with the creation of phantom servers.

It was a terrible experience and I wasted 2 years on it with the company. Would run screaming from anyone that wanted it and would not even put it on my resume. Avoid at all costs !
